Conservation Economics
New CPAWS-Initiated Study on
Economic Impact of Kluane National Park Now Available
CPAWS-Yukon envisions a robust and diverse economy for the territory, where conservation, wilderness and protected areas are an integral part of the territorial wealth. Conservation brings many economic benefits to communities and the territory as a whole, and these benefits will increase in the future. Completion of a protected areas network will help build a sustainable economy less vulnerable to the boom and bust cycles of resource industries.
CPAWS-Yukon has completed numerous research projects on conservation economics. See our summary report entitled Economic Benefits of Protected Areas (at right). The following are other recent CPAWS-initiated and supported reports:
A major independent economic research project supported by CPAWS-Yukon is now underway in Haines Junction, where a diverse group of local people hope to determine the long term impacts and benefits of Kluane National Park on the local economy. CPAWS-Yukon also provides training opportunities in conservation and regularly hires a variety of community people for contract and project work.
