CPAWS-Yukon Dinner & Discussion Night
Thursday, October 2, 2008
5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
506 Steele Street, Whitehorse
Subject: Free Entry Mining
The free entry system of granting mineral tenure was developed back in the Gold Rush days of the 1850s. The underlying philosophy of this frontier mentality was that mining was the best use of Crown land. Public attitudes and mining technologies have changed, yet the archaic law remains.
CPAWS-Yukon is working together with the Yukon Conservation Society to raise awareness about the challenges of the free entry system, stimulate discussion and determine if there is appetite to see a better system put into place for the Yukon.
Bring your ideas and the food is free!
Hope to see you there.

In 2003, CPAWS-Yukon invited 11 nationally prominent artists, writers, journalists and photographers to join 26 people from the Yukon and Northwest Territories on three separate but simultaneous journeys along the Snake, the Wind, and the Bonnet Plume rivers. The artistic fruits of those experiences culminated in the acclaimed Three Rivers: Wild Waters, Sacred Places art exhibition that launched in Whitehorse in the fall of 2004. This vibrant show embarked on a Canadian tour in 2005. Future showings will be posted here on the CPAWS Yukon Web site.

Being Caribou documentary
Available Light Film Festival
March 1-6, 2005
Whitehorse, Yukon
From April 8 to September 8, 2003, newlyweds Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison followed, on foot, the annual migration of the Porcupine Caribou Herd from their wintering range near Old Crow, Yukon to the spring calving grounds on Alaskas coastal plain, and back again. Stunning footage and intimate diary recordings reveal the amazing and difficult life of being caribou, and make clear the urgent and imminent threat posed by American oil and gas drilling to these northern creatures.
