Three Rivers – Participants and Supporters

The Three Rivers project invited 11 nationally prominent artists, writers, journalists, and photographers to join 26 people from the Yukon and Northwest Territories in three separate, simultaneous journeys along the Snake, the Wind, and the Bonnet Plume Rivers.

The eight visual artists who participated in the project are:

  • Michael Belmore, Ontario (sculptor/installation artist)
  • Ron Bolt, Ontario (landscape/nature painter)
  • Marlene Creates, Newfoundland (photo-based installation artist)
  • Gwen Curry, British Columbia (installation artist)
  • Jane Isakson, Yukon (painter)
  • Joyce Majiski, Yukon (printmaker/mixed media artist)
  • José Mansilla-Miranda, Ontario (painter), and
  • Haruko Okano, British Columbia (installation artist).

They were chosen through a juried competition from more than 200 submissions received from across Canada. These artists were joined by well-known award winning photographers:

  • Courtney Milne of Saskatchewan
  • Marten Berkman of the Yukon, and
  • Fritz Mueller of the Yukon

… whose works also appear in various publications about the Three Rivers Journey.

The visual artists and photographers were joined by Yukon and visiting writers, including:

  • Richard Nelson, Sitka, Alaska, writer, broadcaster and cultural anthropologist
  • Brian Brett, Salt Spring Island, poet, journalist, and fiction writer
  • Frank Clifford, Los Angeles, California, journalist and non-fiction book writer
  • Sarah Locke, Whitehorse, writer and editor
  • Paul McKay, Ottawa, journalist and book author
  • Peter Lesniak, Whitehorse, journalist and newspaper editor, and
  • Teresa Earle, Whitehorse, freelance writer.

Community participants included:

  • Liz Hansen, May Andre and Robert Mantla of Ft. McPherson, NWT, and
  • Debbie Buyck, Jimmy Johnny and Bonnie Smith of Mayo, Yukon.

Conservationists and biologists included Dave Mossop, Gladys Netro, Elaine Alexie, Peter Sandiford, Scott Henderson, and the project leader, Juri Peepre.

Trip guides included Blaine Walden, Joe Bishop, Jill Pangman, Kathy Elliot, George Saure, and Kate Moylan. Jennifer Goethals of the Wilburforce Foundation was a special guest.

The Three Rivers support team included:

  • Brenda Oziewicz, river trip logistics coordinator
  • Charlene Alexander and Scott Marsden of the Yukon Arts Centre, artist liaisons
  • Erica Heuer of wallymaltz design, publicity, and
  • Mac Hislop and Lisa Mainer, CPAWS staff.
